Coal carbonizations Group (CCG) of RDCIS-SAIL carries out Basic research in coal beneficiation & characterization, coal carbonization and post carbonization treatment of coke. Apart from basic research CCG provides innovative technological support to SAIL Plants/Units through R&D projects/investigative study to improve the quality of coke and coal chemicals, improvement in productivity of coke ovens, formulation of coal blends, introduction of new technology, pilot scale trials for introduction of new imported coals in SAIL plants, testing and analytical support to plants.

In addition to undertaking regular plant based projects, the CCG involves in maintenance and utilization of existing laboratory equipment and creation of new facilities. CCG manages a Laboratory Complex comprising of Pilot Coke Oven (250KG) with Top & Stamp charge facilities, Mini pilot oven (20 kg) with Top & Stamp charge along with dry quenching facilities, Coal Beneficiation Lab, Coal Pre heater, Micum Drum, CSR/CRI equipment, Petrographic Microscope, Plastometer, Dilatometer, Proximate analyzer and various other equipments required for characterization of coal, coke and coal chemicals . Laboratory facilities were maintained with availability of over 95% and were used extensively for various experimental works.

CCG also provides consultancy assignments, specialized testing, Contract research, Technology awareness, analytical support to non sail plants/ external customer in the field of coal, coke & coal Chemicals. CCG provides platform in the form of operating committee meeting where major steel plants of India participate and share their knowledge and problems and its solutions. Our esteemed customers are TATA Steel, Uttam Galva, JSPL, JSW and many more.

On the intellectual property front, the CCG has delivered excellent outputs. During 2021-22, engineers of the group filed one patent. Engineers have also published 6 papers in the reputed National and International Journals and presented 3 papers in different conferences
